FALSE CLAIM:

Knute opposed efforts to expand abortion.

TRUTH:

Knute is pro-choice, voted for public-funding of abortion, and has a record of improving access to health services for women – passing Oregon’s groundbreaking contraceptive access legislation. He voted against HB 3391 because it promised new services and programs that Oregon could not afford. For more information on Knute’s position on abortion, see his op-ed.

FALSE CLAIM:

Knute “attacked” Planned Parenthood and “promises to restrict access to essential health services”.

TRUTH:

Knute publicly defended Planned Parenthood and other women’s health clinics by opposing President Trump’s proposed rules that would have restricted funding for facilities that refer for abortion. While in the legislature, he worked with Planned Parenthood to increase access to health services for women – such as contraceptives (The New York Times—A Step Forward for Contraceptive Access).  He also opposed the Republican proposal to replace the Affordable Care Act because it would cut essential Medicaid services for thousands of Oregonians. Finally, despite opposition from most of his fellow Republicans in the House, he voted for public funding for abortion so that women have access to critical services regardless of income.

FALSE CLAIM:

Knute is not pro-choice.

TRUTH:

Knute has not only been a consistent advocate for women’s right to choose, but it has been validated by nearly every major news publication in the state. The Oregonian, Bend Bulletin, Statesman Journal, Portland Tribune, Willamette Week, OPB, and East Oregonian have all said that Knute is pro-choice. As governor, Knute has promised that Oregon will remain a pro-choice state – regardless of anything that happens in Washington, DC or the courts.
